Acupuncture is a healing modality in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), an ancient system of medicine that originated in Orient over 3000 years ago. Acupuncture involves the insertion of extremely fine needles into the body at specific points in order to achieve a therapeutic effect and restore health. No drug is injected. The needles alone create the beneficial effects of acupuncture.

Acupuncture is used to encourage natural healing, improve mood and energy, reduce or relieve pain and improve function of affected areas of the body. It is safe and effective and is often successfully used as an alternative to medications or even surgery.

How Does It Work?

TCM explains that health is the result of a harmonious balance of yin and yang forces of the life energy known as Qi (chee). Qi is said to flow through meridians (pathways) in the human body. Through the 350+ acupuncture points in the body, these meridians and energy flow may be accessed. Illness and disease is said to be the consequence of an imbalance of these forces. Thus, by inserting  needles  into these points in the appropriate combinations, it is said that the energy flow can be brought back into proper balance. In this way, acupuncture regulates and restores balance to the body naturally.

In Western societies, acupuncture is explained by the concepts of neuroscience. Acupuncture points are considered to be places where nerves, muscles and connective tissue can be stimulated. In this perspective, acupuncture needles produce an increase in bloodflow (bringing oxygen, nutrients etc.) as well as trigger the activity of the body's natural painkillers. This release of pain relieving and regulatory chemicals needed for cellular repair has been shown to improve biochemical balance and promotes the body’s natural healing abilities.

At Art of Wellness, Dr. Shamira uses both Eastern and Western styles of acupuncture to suit the nature of the condition. This drugless approach to creating health and balance in the body continues to grow in popularity as people experience the remarkable benefits of Acupuncture.
