Chiropractic is the most widely used form of complementary and alternative medicine in the world. According to the Association of Chiropractic Colleges, “Chiropractic is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs and surgery. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health."

How Does Chiropractic Optimize Health?

Many individuals assume that chiropractors only treat back and neck pain – and while we do quickly and effectively eliminate pain in many cases – it definitely is not the only goal.

The spinal column encases the nervous system (spinal cord and nerve roots) and is responsible for its protection. Your nervous system is the master controller of all living cells, tissues and organs – orchestrating and coordinating all functions.

Because of this relationship, when the spinal column loses its proper motion, alignment and/or functional ability, it can lead not only to pain and dysfunction, but more importantly, can put stress on the nervous system — either through inflammatory biochemicals or from direct mechanical pressure. In either case, the function of the nervous system is affected which can hinder the overall function of our bodies. Thus, the objective of chiropractic is to restore and optimize the function of the spine, nervous system and therefore, one’s overall health.

What is an ‘Adjustment’?

Using a number of unique and highly refined skills and procedures, chiropractors check a patient’s spine for any misalignments. If detected, they use various techniques (mostly done by hand) to restore proper alignment and function to the spinal column and other related joints of the body, called a ‘Chiropractic Adjustment’.

Adjustments are safe, non-invasive procedures that require years of study and practice. In addition, there are many styles or techniques within the Chiropractic profession – each with a unique approach to the spine. That is what makes Chiropractic an Art as well as a Science – no two chiropractors are alike! At Art of Wellness, we use a combination of techniques to best suit each patient case.
